Fall Has Arrived — Is Your Home Ready? A Room-by-Room Checklist to Prep for the Holiday Season

Well, it's official. As of today, summer is done. Pumpkin spice has been available at every coffee shop since August, the leaves are starting to hint at their next look, and somewhere in the distance, a string of Christmas lights is already being untangled.

Fall is here — and that means the holidays are closer than you think.

Before you get swept up in the chaos of Thanksgiving, holiday gatherings, and guests showing up at your door unannounced (you know who you are), now is the perfect time to get your home in order. A little effort in September goes a long way when December rolls around and you have approximately zero energy left.

Let's walk through it room by room.

First Things First: Declutter Before You Deep Clean

There's no point scrubbing a house that's still packed with stuff you don't need. Start here. It takes a couple of hours and the payoff is huge.

Decluttering Checklist:

  • Go through your closets and pull out anything you haven't worn since last fall. If it's been a full year — donate it or toss it. Your future self does not need those shoes.

  • Round up the kids' toys and do a honest edit. Broken, outgrown, or forgotten? Into the donation box it goes. (Pro tip: do this while they're at school.)

  • Check your pantry for expired food. Yes, all of it. That can of pumpkin puree from 2023 needs to go. You will be cooking a lot more over the next few months — start with a clean slate.

Decluttering also makes your home feel bigger without spending a single dollar. That's a win before you've even picked up a sponge.

Head Outside Before the Cold Sets In

Your outdoor spaces took a beating all summer. Before the first frost shows up and makes everything harder, tackle this list while you can still feel your fingers.

Outdoor & Exterior Checklist:

  • Clean your patio furniture thoroughly — wipe down cushions, scrub frames, and let everything dry completely before storing. Storing dirty furniture is how you end up with mold by spring.

  • Break down and store patio furniture properly. Stack chairs, fold tables, and cover or store items in your garage or shed. If it can't handle a Virginia winter, it shouldn't stay outside.

  • Clean your gutters. This one is unglamorous but genuinely important. Clogged gutters mean water damage, and water damage means expensive repairs. Get up there (or call someone who will) and clear out all those leaves and debris before the fall drop really kicks in.

  • Head into the garage and shed for a full organization pass. Consolidate tools, toss anything broken, and make room for the outdoor furniture coming in. Winterize any equipment that needs it — drain hoses, check your lawn mower, store gas-powered tools properly.

Getting your outdoor spaces in order now means you won't be doing it in a coat and gloves next month.

Deep Clean the Inside of Your Home

Here's where the real magic happens. The holidays bring guests, big meals, cozy fires, and a lot of time spent indoors. Your home needs to be ready for all of it — not just the surfaces people can see.

Inside Deep Cleaning Checklist:

  • Oven — This one is not optional if you're planning to cook a holiday meal. Grease buildup doesn't just smell bad; it can smoke and affect the taste of everything you bake. Clean it now, before Thanksgiving sneaks up on you.

  • Windows — Summer left its mark: smudges, dust, pollen, and screen grime. Clean windows let in the natural light that makes your home feel warm and welcoming during the darker months. Inside and outside counts.

  • Baseboards — Nobody looks at them until someone looks at them. Give every room a pass with a damp cloth or microfiber — you'll be amazed at how much fresher everything feels.

  • Carpets — If your carpets haven't been shampooed since spring, now is the time. Summer traffic means embedded dirt, pet dander, and odors that no amount of vacuuming fully handles. Fresh carpets heading into holiday season? Yes, please.

  • Fireplaces — If you have a wood-burning fireplace, get it inspected and cleaned before you light it for the first time this season. Creosote buildup is a fire hazard — not the cozy kind. For gas fireplaces, check the pilot light and give the exterior a good wipe-down.

  • HVAC filters and vents — Your heating system is about to work overtime. A dirty filter makes it work even harder, which costs you money and reduces air quality. Replace the filter now, vacuum out your vents, and start the heating season fresh.
