5 Things You're Forgetting to Clean (And Why That's Gross)

Let’s be real — you clean your home. You vacuum, you wipe down the counters, you scrub the toilet (most of the time). You’re doing great. But there are a few spots that are quietly collecting bacteria, dust, and general grossness while you pat yourself on the back. They’re easy to miss because they blend into the background. They don’t look dirty. But trust us — they are.

Here are five commonly forgotten cleaning spots, why they matter, and a quick fix for each one.

1. Light Switches and Door Handles

Think about how many times a day you touch a light switch or a door handle. Now think about how many other people in your household do the same thing — after cooking, after coughing, after using the bathroom. Studies have found that light switches can harbor hundreds of bacteria per square inch, including staph and E. coli. And yet, they almost never make it onto anyone’s cleaning checklist.

Quick fix: Wipe them down weekly with a disinfecting wipe or a microfiber cloth dampened with an all-purpose cleaner. Takes about 90 seconds. Worth it.

2. The Remote Control

The remote control is basically a petri dish with a battery compartment. It lives on the couch, gets passed around during movie nights, gets set down on every surface imaginable, and almost never sees a cleaning cloth. Research from the University of Virginia found that TV remotes were among the most contaminated objects in hotel rooms — and your home remote is no different.

Quick fix: Remove the batteries first, then wipe the whole thing down with a disinfecting wipe. Use a toothpick to get into the crevices between buttons. Do this every couple of weeks and you’ll feel significantly less horrified the next time someone hands you the remote.

3. Ceiling Fans

Out of sight, out of mind — until you turn on the fan in spring and it snows dust onto your freshly cleaned living room. Ceiling fan blades accumulate dust quickly because of the static electricity they generate. That dust doesn’t just sit there looking bad either; it circulates through the air every time the fan spins, which is great news if you enjoy breathing in a cloud of allergens.

Quick fix: Use an old pillowcase to clean each blade — slide the pillowcase over the blade and pull it back toward you, trapping the dust inside instead of launching it into the air. Do this monthly during heavy-use seasons and before turning the fan on for the first time each year.

4. Baseboards

Nobody wakes up excited to clean baseboards. They’re low, they’re tedious, and they’re easy to ignore because you’re not exactly staring at them during your day. But baseboards collect dust, pet hair, and general household grime over time, and in high-traffic areas, they can start to look dingy faster than you’d expect.

Quick fix: A damp microfiber cloth or a dryer sheet (yes, really) works great for baseboards. The dryer sheet picks up dust and leaves a light coating that repels future buildup. Once a month for high-traffic areas, every couple of months elsewhere, and you’re golden.

5. The Garbage Disposal

You pour water down it. You run it every day. Surely it cleans itself, right? Wrong. Food particles, grease, and moisture create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and mold inside your garbage disposal — and that smell you occasionally notice from the sink? That’s it saying hello. A neglected disposal can harbor salmonella and E. coli, and the gunk can build up on the splash guard and interior walls where you’d never think to look.

Quick fix: Once a week, toss a few ice cubes and a handful of coarse salt down the drain and run the disposal — this scrubs the interior walls. Follow it with half a lemon or a splash of white vinegar to neutralize odors. For the rubber splash guard, clean the underside with an old toothbrush and dish soap. It takes five minutes and makes a real difference.

You’re Already Doing the Hard Part

Look — nobody expects a spotless home 24/7. Life is busy, kids are chaotic, and there are only so many hours in the day. These five spots just need a little attention added to your existing routine, and they’ll stop being the hidden gross zones they’ve been quietly serving as.
